The sweeping and dramatic view from the roof deck includes the Monongahela River Valley, Downtown, Oakland and the lofts' South Side neighborhood on the Flats. Three blocks north is the Carson Street shopping district, home to some of Pittsburgh's finest restaurants, hottest night life and most eclectic shopping. The south side combines friendly old-world neighborhoods and vibrant industrial areas to produce a unique living experience with the feel of a local neighborhood and the convenience and bustle of a big city.
Two miles northwest of the lofts across a bridge spanning the Monongahela River, lies the Golden Triangle's downtown skyline of commerce, banking, and culture.
A mile to the north, the towering Cathedral of Learning flags Oakland's universities, medical centers, museums, and libraries. Closer still, Carnegie Mellon University's New Technology Center sits on the north banks of the Monongahela River.
Back on the South Side Flats and South of the lofts, freight cars still travel a main track of the great Norfolk & SouthernRailroad. Just beyond the track, the Flats rise to become steep hills known as "the Slopes", a dense network of well established neighborhoods featuring the ornate spires and gleaming domes of European churches, secluded parks, and riveting war memorials.
A short run or drive west on the Flats is the imposing Station Square - formerly a main terminal for the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad and beautifully renovated to house fine restaurants and shops. Station Square is an originating point for river cruises and tours. A few blocks away are the handsome inclines of Mount Washington.
Three miles to the east, the new Homestead Waterfront shopping and entertainment complex is under construction. The complex will include a 22 screen theatre, many large retailers, super grocery store etc. Further east is the world famous Kennywood Amusement Park and Sandcastle water park. [NEIGHBORHOOD]
Walk, cycle, drive, or use mass transportation to work. Both bridges closest to the Southside Lofts are suitable for pedestrians, cyclists, and cars. The lofts are ideally situated three blocks from the Birmingham bridge that provides access to the Parkway East and Forbes Avenue to Oakland and Downtown Pittsburgh. Ample secure off-street and garage parking is available at the Lofts.
In 1763, King George granted the entire South Side to a veteran major of the French and Indian Wars as a reward for his service to the Crown. The South Side's village of Birmingham was established in 1811 and the South Side Flats is a Birmingham neighborhood.
The first Europeans to settle in the Flats early in the 19th century, the Germans and the Irish, were followed by Poles, Slovaks, Serbs, Lithuanians, and Ukrainians. These immigrants and their descendants supplied the grist and backbone that fueled Pittsburgh's steel, coal, and glass industries; industries that fired the imaginations and markets of the Industrial Era.
Today's churches, parks, gardens, schools, alleys, squares, corner pubs and small shops reflect the patchwork fabric of an old neighborhood cobbled together by many nationalities. The SouthSide Lofts are part of the Flats neighborhood and situated mere blocks from:
Complimenting local small businesses and tucked away from the historical district is a small shopping plaza with a supermarket, pharmacy, and video outlet.
